An elastic-plastic finite element analysis is performed on a cylinder with a circumferential surface crack, under remote traction loading, to establish limits of HRR dominance. The HRR (Hutchinson, Rice and Rosengren) fields correspond to the asynmptotic stress and strain fields of a mathematically sharp crack in a nonlinear material with power law hardening. Under HRR dominance, the elastic-plastic stress field in the crack front is characterized by a single parameter, such as the J- integral fracture mechanics parameter. The J-based approach has been very useful in correlating the initiation of ductile crack growth.
