I.c. engine cylinder deformation limiter comprises stiffener with low thermal expansion coefficient between cylinder wall and liner

The deformation limiter consists of a cylindrical stiffener (4) made from carbon fibres running round its circumference or in a woven warp and weft, fitted between the inner surface (21) of an i.c. engine cylinder block wall (1) and the outer surface (31) of a cylinder liner (3). The stiffener has low thermal expansion and conductivity coefficients, is about 0.1 mm thick. It is fitted to the cylinder sleeve after cooling the sleeve and heating the stiffener.
