Significant differences exist in grain size, color, and composition of fly ash particles between upstream and downstream collection sites in an exhaust stream from a coal-fired power plant unit. Upstream samples typically contain a greater volume of coarser material and are darker in color than downstream samples. The lighter color of downstream samples is likely due to a Figure 5. Model, depicting the postulated alteration pathways followed by downstream and upstream samples during leaching experiments. For downstream samples, small glass spheres are numerous and most are coated with the APS material.
