The Western Maryland Coal Combustion By-Products (CCB)/Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Initiative - The Winding Ridge Project

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Power Plant Research Program (PPRP) and the Maryland Department of the Environment Bureau of Mines (MDE) have undertaken the Western Maryland CCB/AMD Initiative (the Initiative), which is a joint effort with private industry to develop techniques to prevent AMD. The Initiative's goal is to demonstrate the beneficial application of free-lime containing CCBs to abate AMD from underground coal mines by implementing several injection projects. Ultimately, the Initiative is targeting abatement of AMD from the most serious AMD sources in the state, such as the Kempton Mine Complex.
