Some Characteristics and Potential Uses of Coal Fly Ash from Israel

Until 1982, all of Israel's electric power was produced from oil. From this time on, all new power stations have been coal burning and currently more that half the country's power is produced from coal. Ash disposal has been considered a problem from the start and all the existing solutions have now reached their maximum utilization or are forbidden by law. Hence the question of ash disposal has become increasingly acute. By the year 2001 Israel will produce about 1.3 million tonnes of coal ash per annum and of this only about 600,000 tonnes can be utilized under the present regulations.rnTwo representative samples of Israeli fly ash, "South African" and "Colombian", were examined for their mineralogical, chemical and technical properties. The data show that both ashes may be classified as Type F under ASTM C 618, although they contain more CaO than a typical U.S. ash of this type. Based on Strength Index data, the South African fly ash was found to be a better pozzolan than the Colombian.rnSuggestions are made for the beneficiation and use of these ashes in the special context of the Israel economy. These uses could transform fly ash from a possibly toxic waste material into a valuable industrial resource.
