This paper presents the results of an experimental study on crack detection in metallic structural components using ultrasonic surface waves. The laboratory tests include both travel time and signal amplitude measurements in through-transmission and pulse-echo modes. Use of the amplitude measurements and energy spectrum parameters (e.g., area under the PSD curve, peak amplitude) have been found to provide additional information, which has increased the sensitivity of the usltrasonic technique for crack detection. The technique has been successfully used to detect fatigue cracks in metallic beams.
