Industrial Radiography (RT) is an old and familiar ondestructive testing tool, providing graphical information on volumetric integrity, canned contents, etc. Electromagnetic radiation common to RT applications is hazardous to certain degrees and unfortunately, is linked in the general public's mind with failed nuclear reactors spewing contamination, horrific bombs, genetic mutations, and science fiction thrillers. This perception of danger along with a decreasing but ongoing record of actual RT related radiation injuries and incidents has, over the years, promulgated the regulatory atmosphere which exists today. The NRC and Agreement States Agencies with their rules, regulations, licenses, and safety audits are as important to RT operations as producing high quality radiographs. Failure of a Radioactive MAaterials licensee or x-ray machine registrant to satisfy a regulatory agency auditor(s) of the efficacy of their radiation safety program can result in costly fines or other sanctions.
