The aim of teh paper is to discuss the validation of the NDE methods for materials characterization. It will deal with the necessity of validation on the one hand and possihle ways to do it on the other hand. These ways shaoo include the conceptions applied in NDE so far as well as ideas described by the "ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement" which has also been included in European recommmendtiaons for the accrediation of testing laboratories/1/. They are a subject of the work of committees of the German Society for Non-destructive Testing (DGZfP). The first proposals of the committees will be presented. Finally, an example for validation in industrial application - accomplished by the IZfP in cooperation with a casting company - will be demonstrated. The subject of validation is a newly developed magnetic testing method for inclusions of too high hardness in casted steel parts. The complex validation procedure consists of five steps containing each different aspect of the above mentioned rules.
