This paper describes an approach to shape optimal designrnof elastic, statically loaded, planar frames with kinematicallyrnnon-linear response where special attention is focused onrnconsideration of elastic and skew-sliding supports. A framernstructure is treated as to be assembled from several designrnelements each of them being defined as a Bezier curve. Therndesign variables may influence the position and the shape ofrneach design element, the cross-sectional properties of beamrnelements, the elastic properties of the supports as well as thernangles of inclination of sliding supports. Highly accurate,rnlocking-free and initially curved beam elements are employedrnto ensure accurate and reliable results. The optimal designrnproblem is defined in a general form and its solution, byrnemploying gradient based methods of mathematicalrnprogramming, is discussed briefly. The theory is illustratedrnwith a numerical example.
