Stimulated in part by the availability of new microwave technologies, demand is growing rapidly, worldwide, for wideband telecommunications services. CSIRO, in partnership with commercial clients, is developing telecommunication systems to meet these needs, working at frequencies up to 100 GHz. Millimetre-wave GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are a key component of the broadband, wireless, backhaul links and high-data-rate wireless local-area networks that are being investigated. This paper presents an overview of the Division's MMIC technology and shows how it is being applied to help industry develop practical millimetre-wave systems for broadband communication services.
