A technique is presented that has been verified experimentally tonimprove the synchronization efficiency of digital communication systemsnover present systems without sacrificing any reliability. This techniquenis called the spread-spectrum pilot technique (SSPT). Incorporated intonthis technique are elements of both tone-calibrated techniques andnspread-spectrum systems. In the SSPT system, the desired pilot tone isnmodulated by a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) generator of finitenduration and then linearly added to the source (customer) date that arenactually being sent. At the receiver, the same finite PRBS sequence isnused to decode the received signal. The system works because it providesnan accurate version of the actual data carrier to be used inndemodulation of the received signal. It is strongly believed that thisntype of system will enable better performance in multipath fadingnenvironments that are especially problematic in mobile-radionapplications
