This paper discusses the adaptation of the settings of distancenrelays for multi-terminal lines employing agents. Agents are softwarenprocesses capable of searching for information in networks, interactingnwith pieces of equipment and performing tasks on behalf of their ownersn(relays). Moreover, they are autonomous and cooperative. Very fewnpublications concerning the application of agents in the protectionnfield have been reported in the literature. Y Tomita et al. (see IEEEnTrans. on Power Delivery, vol.13, no.4, p.1060-6, 1998) proposed ancooperative protection system utilizing agents. Relay agents werenconstructed, and the cooperation of the main agents was simulated fornprimary, backup and adaptive protection. Results illustrating thenimproved performance of the adaptive method proposed compared tonconventional fixed settings are presented in the paper
