Natural language processing-a psychological perspective

The paper is concerned with the characteristics of an idealnnatural language understanding system. It is suggested that in additionnto processing new linguistic input, such a system should be capable ofnmonitoring the output from a natural language generating (NLG) componentnin a comprehensive system. In order to perform these two functionsnefficiently, it is argued that the NLU system should process sentencesnand texts in exactly the same way that humans do. This points to thenneed for close co-operation between system designers and psycholinguistsnin work of this kind
