Wavedriver~? is a proprietary combined on-board fast charge/drive train control system for electricrnvehicles (EVs). It possesses a number of innovatory features in comparison with more conventionalrnsystems. The system’s on-board fast charge capability providing for 50% state of charge (SOC)rnreplenishment in 30 minutes is particularly significant by virtue of its potential to expand thernapplications domain of EVs, but without undue demands on expensive fixed charging infra-structure.rnThe Wavedriver~? system has been developed from its initial prototypical form, through to the presentrnpre-production Gamma system, suitable for application in a variety of vehicle platforms, includingrndelivery vans, commercial vehicles and passenger buses. The paper describes the implementation andrnsubsequent demonstration of Wavedriver~? in a small fleet of 11.5 m3 capacity delivery vans. Thernvehicle demonstrations themselves involve their operation with Merseytravel, the public transportrnplanning and co-ordination organisation for Merseyside, and with Royal Mail, the UK’s postalrnservices organisation.rnThe paper describes the demonstration programme, the commissioning of the demonstration vehiclesrnand their introduction into service with both Merseytravel and Royal Mail. The paper presents thernperformance of the vehicle in routine commercial service. The paper also addresses some aspects ofrnthe subsequent commercialisation of the system.
