The preliminary results obtained from the experiments carried out thus far show that AE has the potential to become a useful wear rate monitoring technique. In general, the AE variation is low when the wear rate is mild and high when the wear rate is severe. The occurrence of severe wear is characterized by the intensification of one or more wear mechanisms. This results in high AE activity and in the release of greater amounts of energy. It appears that the energy released is in a specific frequency range (100-500kHz). The potential of AE as a tool to detect and monitor different wear rates and wear mechanisms will be further explored.
