This paper presents a new method to calculate transient parameters of salient-pole synchronous machine by using finite element analysis(FEA). 2-D non-linear field-circuit coupled time-harmonic FEA analysis, static magnetic field FEA analysis and frozen permeability method are applied for transient equivalent circuit parameters calculation under no load three phases sudden short status. Transient parameters of the machine are obtained by definition formulas from equivalent circuit with the consideration of magnetic variation. Leakage inductances are particularly extracted and calculated. The transient parameters calculated by conventional method and experimental results of prototype machine are provided to confirm the accuracy of the presented method.
