Various composite applications have been considered and demonstrated for infrastructure. Most of the applications have been an attempt to prove that composite materials can perform to the same level as concrete and steel. Few applications show the real benefits of composites or identify when it is justified to consider these materials. Composite bridge deck panels supported by steel girders appears to be an opportunity that promotes legitimate use of composites in construction. This paper will discuss why deck panels benefit from composites, what current projects are incorporating this concept, and what issues must be resolved before the market accepts this application.
