Lions' Gate Suspension Bridge Deck and Stiffening Truss Replacement

The Lions' Gate Suspension Bridge, which was opened in 1938, has a 472 meter (1550 foot) center span and is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 1997, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was retained to design the replacement of the suspended structure (deck, sidewalks, stiffening trusses, and suspenders). The design was completed in December 1998; three bids were received in February 1999; and the successful Contractor, American Bridge/Surespan A Joint Venture, was selected in April 1999. By the end of April 2000, construction engineering and deck fabrication were well underway, with deck replacement anticipated to commence in the late Spring of 2000. Both design and construction methods must accommodate the replacement of the suspended structure while maintaining regular traffic (70,000 vehicles per day) except during short closure periods.
