One of the main ice conditions in areas, where ice does not actively move is how the vessels behave in ice channels. In Lake Saimaa the winter traffic has been continuing on regular basis the last 10 years. The operation mainly consists of using barges/motor barges assisted by an icebreaker. The paper describes the work done to develop the bow form of Motor Barge Vekara. The original bow tended to push ice in front of it until the ice pile came so big that the vessel was stopped and in some cases the vessel got stuck really bad. The project consisted of the following phases: foll scale trials with the original bow shape, design of two different bow alternatives to be tested in model scale, selection of new bow type, design of the new bow, construction of the new bow, confirmation of the performance in full-scale.
