The Dual Resonance Capacitor (DRC) is designed to replace two standard capacitors where circuit board area is restricted, functioning as a dual frequency filter. A single DRC device has been successfully developed to remove GSM900 and GSM1800 transmission frequency noise from the earphone circuit of a dual band cellular phone. Monolithic multilayer ceramic technology has been utilised to produce self-resonance at two specific frequencies. In this paper a Finite Element Model (FEM) is presented that accurately predicts the DRC at radio frequencies. Measurement is compared against modelled results with excellent agreement and later the model is developed to demonstrate the DRC response where electrodes are relocated, altered in geometry and subjected to different manufacturing processes. This background information provides the ability to use the model to enhance the performance of the original component and meet new customer specific frequencies.
