Assessment of Rail Profiles by Boundary Element

Due to the wide variety of stress investigations in railway track parts and numerous researches onrnthis subject, it would be satisfactory to study stresses within rail profiles, without studying stressesrnwithin sleepers and ballast. Also, it is sufficient here, to study stresses due to direct loads whetherrnthey are vertical, eccentric, or inclined to wheel-rail contact area. The analysis in this research isrnbased on two-dimensional elastic theory by using boundary element method. In this work, arncomparison between the original European UIC60 rail shape and its modified shape, which isrnavailable in literature, is investigated. The stress distribution is calculated for each rails and therninfluence of this modification on stresses at the boundaries and inside the rail profile cross-section isrnconsidered. A new rail profile shape is suggested to overcome the disadvantages of the classicrnUIC60 and its modified rail shape.
