The exchange of data in a concurrent traffic model coupling environment poses challenging problems of algorithmic nature. The approach presented here provides for the first time key structures and all mathematical solutions including a new hybrid disaggregator required for carrying out coupling of concurrent microscopic and macroscopic models. The results of coupling imply first practical applications. The coupling could be used for example to generate input data for macroscopic simulations from hourly or even rougher time series available from traffic planning. Obviously, the hybrid disaggregator can be used also to couple microscopic models to aggregated traffic data from a wide range of non concurrent sources. Of course the most interesting application will be the hybrid microscopic and macroscopic simulation of road networks. An important problem to be solved in further research is to define a systematic procedure for identifying regions that can be optimally simulated by either macroscopic or microscopic techniques.
