The Katzenberg tunnel is the first German high-speed tunnel with single track tunnels and portal hoods that went into operation in December 2012. Though being designed in parallel to the drafting of guidelines, it complies well with the limits of the new micro-pressure wave regulation, as documented by the measurements. With experience from 1:1 and model scale measurements, validated prognosis tools and experience from several German portal hood design projects, DB Systemtechnik provides expertise in the field of aerodynamics and acoustics to assist in design and homologation procedures for upcoming tunnel projects. As the new regulation (4) requires documented evidence based on validated simulations, thus without any later testing at site, ten other German tunnel projects with micro-pressure wave countermeasures currently under construction can now be finally assessed and designed to meet the acoustic limits implied. Due to the prognosis approach, the authority approval and thus planning reliability can be achieved at an early stage tunnel design.
