Correct Selection of Wear Materials in Coal Handling Systems

I work for a company that specializes in the identification and solution of wear problems. The focus of this presentation will be on coal, its handling, storage, grinding or sizing and the disposal of the combusted fuel ash. Wear is not unique to your industry but the use of coal presents some unique challenges to the operators and maintainers of the power plants that consume the ubiquitous fuel. Our company loves coal. Coal wears everything that it touches. If it doesn't wear it out, it corrodes it out. If it doesn't do either of those, then it plugs it up.rnCoal wears out equipment at the mines, it wears out the machinery at the loading facility. It wears out and corrodes the barges and hopper cars that transport it. It wears out the transfer equipment, the feeders and pulverizers. It wears the pneumatic conveying equipment, the fuel delivery systems and then the ash collection system. As we say in Louisiana, it takes the whole hog, from squeak to tail.
