This paper is concerned with the state estimation and the control of temperature distribution in anrnannular type packed bed adsorber. For the effective separation of multi-component gaseous mixture, itrnis necessary to control the temperature distribution in the two dimensional space (axial and angularrndirection) of the adsorber. In this work, the controller design is based on a method reducingrndistributed parameter system (DPS) to lumped parameter system (LPS) through the eigenfunctionrnexpansion. The advantage of this method is that the design of feedback controller is very simplernbecause the reduced LPS model is completely decoupled. The results show that the whole temperaturerndistribution in the adsorber is estimated accurately from several measurements by using the Kalmanrnfilter as an observer. And the designed servo controllers? performances are satisfactory in spite ofrnusing the reduced order LPS model.
