In this paper the quality control of a valve push rod for modern high quality automobile engines isinvestigated using interval analysis as the main tool. Due to unavoidable errors during manufacturingevery valve push rod has small deviations from the ideal shape. The main problem is to guaranteegood functionality of the imperfectly produced parts. We describe the modelling of the functionalitywhere the main focus is on the displacement, displacement velocity and displacement acceleration ofthe valve. Using three different interval arithmetic approaches we demonstrate that the influence ofthe manufacturing errors can be computed with guaranteed precision. Thus, interval arithmetic is anexcellent tool to analyze the influence of manufacturing errors on the functionality and thus, leads toimproved quality control in manufacturing.
