We report the gas-phase alkylation reaction of naphthalene with methanol employing MCM-rn41 (Si/Al= 40), Y zeolite (Si/Al=30), β zeolite (Si/Al=15), MCM-22 (Si/Al=15), and pillaredrnclay materials. The relation between the structure of the catalyst and the reaction activity andrnselectivity was studied. The influence of framework Si/Al ratio and crystal size of the tridirectionalrn12 member ring structures (zeolites Y and Beta) has been studied and it has beenrnobserved that, under the reaction conditions used here, the process it is diffusion-controlled.rnHigh selectivity to β-methylnaphthalene (2-MN) was obtained using MCM-41 and MCM-22rncatalysts. For the MCM-22 catalyst, the presence of 10 member ring (MR) channels andrnwindows present severe constraints for the diffusion of naphthalene into the channels,rntherefore, the reaction possibly takes place at the external surface of this material.
