摘要

In the world of sports there is a constant effort to try tornfind more effective methods for training athletes. Thisrnpaper presents the results from the first phase inrndeveloping a novel GPS-based training device to helprnmonitor the training progress of track and cross countryrnrunners. The idea is simply that, if a runner?s velocity canrnbe compared to his or her heart rate and the runner?srnperception of work, then workouts can be run much morerneffectively. However, in the past, monitoring an athlete?srninstantaneous velocity and position was not possible.rnCoaches had to rely on split times and make assumptionsrnabout speed at various points on the track or the course.rnThe problem in finding an effective way to monitorrnposition and velocity continuously was easily solved byrnusing a GPS receiver with memory capabilities. Thisrnpaper presents two prototype systems using two differentrnGPS receivers and a Polar? heart rate monitoring systemrn[13]. In order to determine the runner?s velocity and heartrnrate, the runner wore a fanny pack containing a GPSrnreceiver, a helmet holding a GPS antenna, and a heartrnmonitoring system as shown in Figure 1.rnInitial system testing involved a simple workout using arn400m long oval track. Once the runner was configuredrnwith the equipment, the following workout wasrnaccomplished: 1) Remain stationary for one minute torndetermine the runner?s resting heart rate. 2) Run 400mrnaround the oval track at a warm-up pace. 3) Stop and restrnfor one minute. 4) Run the same course over again, butrnthis time at a hard pace. 5) Stop and rest for one minute.rn6) Run the same course one more time, this last time at arnGPS Antenna
