摘要

An ideal,defect-free solid could in principle attain its theoretical strength irrespective of the sample size.The actual strength of a macroscopic material is always reduced by the inevitable crack-like flaws.Recently,in-situ TEM experiments observed that thin aluminum strips under tension with a pre-existing edge notch could fail at places away from the notch and there was no measurable stress concentration near the notch tip.
