Up to now, the maximum rated current and power of existing HVDC transmission projects are up to 5000A and 8000MW respectively. The Shanghaimiao-Shandong ±800kV HVDC project which is currently under construction will have a higher transmission capacity with a rated current of up to 6250A. The converter valve for Shanghaimiao-ShandongHVDC project is one of the key equipment which needs significant technical improvement. This paper explains the main parameters in conjunction with the electrical, structural, and thermal improvements of the converter valve. Improvement of the valve control system is briefly described too. The improved converter valve design was experimentally approved to satisfy the technical requirements of Shanghaimiao-Shandong ±800kV HVDC project application.
