The investigation of the soil compaction under tires is presented according to own measurements and numerous model calculations found in the literature. Beside the inflation pressure the following parameters play an important role: Tire load, contact area, contact pressure, sinkage, soil stress under the tire and stress - density - relationship of the soil. The influence of the soil density on the yield, on drawbar pull for instance when plowing, as well as on working speed and field efficiency is determined. In most cases an improvement of all considered points can be reached by a reduction of tire inflation pressure at modern tractor tires.
