Conceptualising and Mapping New Working Environments and Their Impacts on Society

The paper tries to shed some light on the nature of what is being called "new networked working environments" (NWEs) and their impacts on Europe in an economic, social and ecological sense. In order to do so, it relates the discussion around NWEs to earlier phenomena such as tele working/tele-commuting, virtual collaboration and virtual organisations, computer-supported collaborative work, "eOutsourcing" and others. The paper presents a conceptual approach for integrating these models of work organisation and for analysing real-world applications of NWEs and their impacts on main stakeholder groups. It also outlines the way forward for developing a measurement and benchmarking framework to be applied at a territorial level -mostly a region or country - with the purpose of underpinning effective policy-making.
