The steel, ceramic, glass, cement and petroleum industries cannot exist without refractories[l]. Consequently, first class processes can only be obtained and maintained in the iron and steel industry with a well developed in house refractories competence. Global high level refractories education is a prerequisite for that. The Federation for International Refractory Research and Education (FIRE) plays an important role in fulfilling that need, with both academic and industrial members. Moreover, FIRE offers high leverage pre-competitive international studies and research activities in the field of refractories. Within the FIRE community we pool the expertise, experience and willingness of the most competent persons, institutions and companies in the worldwide field of refractories.
