In Brazil, a combination of severe operational conditions in degassers such as high numbers of heatings/day, high oxygen blowing, excessively high operating temperatures, aluminothermy for heating steel, fluorspar addition and high content of special steel production are very common. These conditions have led to a refractory's continuous development; always focusing on the RH campaign improvement. The main product line used in Brazil is the rebonded and semi rebonded Magnesia Chromite bricks. Some developments have been done by using MgO-C bricks in the past, however, graphite oxidation was observed due to the operational conditions. A basic refractory based on dead burned magnesite and zirconia was recently developed for special operational conditions application. This refractory has been successfully used in some companies.
