Usually, the aggregates are required very high bulk density and low porosity. The high bulk density and low porosity of aggregate are corresponding to high energy consumption and CO_2 emission. Based on the microstructure of refractories and the mechanism of slag corrosion, very high bulk density and low porosity of aggregate may not be necessary always. To consider the balance between aggregate and matrix in refractories is important. Application of aggregates with lower bulk density may reduce energy consumption and CO_2 emission in production of aggregates and thermal conductivity of refractories as well. In this paper we introduce some examples of application of lower bulk density of aggregates.
