Recent developments in European legislation concerning blood transfusion

Up to World War Ⅱ , blood transfusion was a surgical operation requiring close proximity between the donor and the patient. Blood donation as well as blood transfusion took place in hospitals, which then had to find the donors. Blood transfusion services were formed as a natural extension of the hospital organisation. Even when transfusion technology developed and became simple routine, its nature remained essentially part of clinical medicine. There was no need for special regulation of blood transfusion services.
