To solve the low efficiency of electric excitation claw-pole synchronous generator (EECSG) and the challenges to regulate the magnetic field of permanent magnet (PM) claw-pole synchronous generator, a novel hybrid excitation claw-pole synchronous generator (HCPSG) with magnetic circuit series connection was proposed in this paper. Through the simulative study to the generator using the calculation method for magnetic circuit and 3D finite element method (FEA), the appropriate magnet thickness and the number of pole-pairs for the proposed generator are found out. Its off-loading characteristics, load characteristics, and regulation behaviors were thoroughly investigated. Our study shows that the proposed generator realizes dual-directional control to the excitation current. Moreover, the proposed generator can adjust the voltage output, and keeps the voltage output stable in a broader load range.
