摘要

The Molasse Basin extends along the northern margin of the Alps from Geneva to Vienna and has a long history of oil and gas exploration. Previous studies showed that lower Oligocene source rocks generate thermogenic oil and gas captured in Cenomanian and Eocene reservoir rocks, while biogenic gas is present within the younger (Oligocene to Miocene) strata. New geochemical data suggests a mixture of biogenic and thermogenic gas in Cenozoic strata which is contradictory to former concepts. In addition, methane may also be generated by biodegradation of oil and gas.
