EMPLOYEE SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENTS OF SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT IN AN INDUSTRIAL COMPANY

Risk management theorists, as well as practitioners, emphasise the importance of employee subjective assessments of organisational factors, health and safety as well as commitment and involvement in accident prevention and safety promotion. The drive to secure these goals has been advanced alongside organisational change through restructuring and downsizing. The present paper aims at measuring employee judgements of organisational factors as well as analysing the associations between job satisfaction, job stress, risk perception, job insecurity and on-the-job risk behaviour. The results are based on studies of employee subjective assessments of these factors on a self-completion questionnaire. The study was carried out in the UK and Nordic Division of a company within the chemical process industry. The data was collected in 1999. A total of about 254 respondents employed by the company replied to the questionnaire. The response rate was 90 per cent. Organisational factors related to downsizing, i,e job insecurity, job dissatisfaction and perceived risk contributed significantly to self-report risk behaviour. The results indicated that downsizing caused by organisational change was related to occupational safety by influencing risk perception, workload and on-the-job behaviour.
