Chlorinated pollutants are known for their persistence in the ecosystem and significant bioaccumulation in the fatty tissues of living organisms. Despite recent regulations concerning chlorinated pesticides and industrial byproducts, there are many areas where these dangerous chemicals persist in the environment, particularly in the soil, sediment, and sludge. These problem areas are in need of remediation by extraction of the harmful pollutants from the solid matrix. The use of subcritical water as an alternate extraction fluid has previously been investigated and proven effective at temperatures as high as 250 to 350℃. The purpose of this research is to combine subcritical water oxidation with subcritical water extraction to degrade and remove organic pollutants. One specific objective of this project is to determine the temperature effect on oxidation rate and efficiency of selected chlorinated pollutants. Also, the removal efficiency of chlorinated pollutants from environmental solids will be optimized by using subcritical water oxidation followed by dynamic subcritical water extractions.
