Contributions of Merck as Material Manufacturer to Green Displays and Electronics

Displays and electronics are subjected to quite some regulations already. Those like RoHS (1) or REACH (2) restrict or ban certain hazardous substances. The European EuP (3) Directive concerns energy consumption. Moreover, voluntary industry initiatives like the 'Halogen-free policy' restrict critical substances additionally. Merck is committed to sustainability and has launched a corporate green chemistry initiative for environmental protection and resource conservation. As leading source for key display and electronics materials the Liquid Crystals Division pursues its Green concept providing innovative, legally compliant and safe specialty chemicals and eco-friendly processes for superior 'green' displays and electronics. Merck has also invented eco-efficient and WEEE (4) -conform recovery processes for waste LCDs.
