By decreasing the pH and adding an iron coagulant, it is possible to dewater sludges with a high biosludge component more effectively. A disadvantage of this method is that large amounts of iron are needed, which increases sludge volume and ash content if the sludge is incinerated. The amount of iron coagulant can be cut by 75 % by using oxidative treatment. Utilisation of hydrogen peroxide seems to improve the dewatering properties of these kinds of sludges even more, while maintaining the current sludge treatment costs.
