Adsorption of Phosphate from Aqueous Solution by Titanium Pillared Bentonites

Phosphate removal is important to control eutrophication and adsorption is an efficient treatment process. In this paper, titanium pillared bentonite (Ti-Bent) were prepared, characterized, and its adsorption properties for phosphate were evaluated in batch experiments. The results showed that the significant increase of interlayer spacing, BET surface area and total pore volume all benefited to the phosphate adsorption. The ability of phosphate adsorption of Ti-Bent is far more than that of Na-Bent. The adsorptive rate of phosphate on the adsorbents fitted pseudo-second order kinetic models well (R2=1.00). The Freundlich model and the Langmuir model were both described the adsorption isotherm data well. Phosphate adsorption on Ti-Bent was greatly influenced by pH indicated an anion/OH exchange reaction.
