In this paper, steam gasification of petroleum coke catalyzed by different biomass ashes anddifferent biomass ash loading is investigated to examine the catalytic effects not only on the gasificationactivity but also on the distribution of product gases, and the physico-chemical properties of three biomassashes are also analyzed. The total contents of alkali metal (K and Na), alkaline earth metal (Ca and Mg) andtransition metal (Fe) in RSA, WSA and CSA are separately up to 22.63%, 43.88%and 55.68%, and a largequantity of catalytic components (such as KCl, K2SO4, K3Na(SO4)2, etc.) contained in these ashes. Thebiomass ashes can greatly enhancing the gasification activity of petroleum coke and the production of H2withno virtual CH4(below 0.1%), and effectively promoting the carbon–water reaction, the water–gas shiftreaction and the steam reforming of methane. The ordering of the catalytic action of various biomass ashes isCSA>WSA>RSA. The increasing loading of CSA is favorable for elevating the gasification activity ofpetroleum coke and the effects of the redundant CSA loading on the gasification activity of petroleum coke isvery little, while the CSA loading nearly has no effects on the distribution of product gases.
