Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity evalution of urban surface waters using freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio-qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 and vicia faba root tip
Abstract:Freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio-qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 test and the Vicia faba root tip testassociated with solid-phase extraction (SPE) were developed for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assessment oforganic substances in three rivers, two lakes and two WWTPs effluents. Zaohe river which mainly receivesuntreated industrial and municipal discharges from the catchment area had the highest cytotoxicity andgenotoxicity (TII50=6.73%, RMCN=33.68‰). Nanhu lake which is a newly built artificial lake had thelowest cytotoxicity and genotoxicity (TII50=0.43, RMCN=1.79‰). Bioassay integrated withphysicochemical analysis could be a complementary approach for water quality assessment. The luminescentbacteria toxicity test showed certain correlative relation with mutagenicity test on Vicia faba root tip cells.Using the two bioassays could comprehensively evaluate the ecotoxicity of environmental samples. Thecorrelation of TII50, RMCN with DO indicated that the prevision of an aerobic condition may be a prerequisitefor maintaining an ecologically healthy water environment.
