Application of Blood Cultures for the Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases

摘要

IntroductionSepsis is often defined as the symptomatic presence of microorganisms in the blood. The presence of microorganisms in the blood of a patient is clinically important due to the considerable morbidity and mortality associated with sepsis.Indeed, the overall mortality of sepsis is approximately 30%.It is thus no surprise that blood cultures have been used to detect clinically significant sepsis and bacteremia for over 100 years.
