Production of heat insulating layer containing zirconium oxide on a component comprises: forming the layer using plasma flash evaporation of a liquid aerosol containing carrier gas and zirconium in the form of zirconium compounds dissolved in the liquid; producing a plasma from the gas stream; mixing the aerosol with the plasma; and applying zirconium oxide onto component. Production of a heat insulating layer containing zirconium oxide on a component involves using plasma flash evaporation of a liquid aerosol to form the layer. The aerosol contains carrier gas and zirconium in the form of zirconium compounds dissolved in the liquid. A plasma is produced from a gas stream by inductive coupling of electrical energy. The aerosol is mixed with the plasma. From the reaction product zirconium oxide is applied to the component. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a coating chamber (20) containing the component as substrate, a high frequency generator (3) which interacts with a plasma generator, and a liquid pump (8) for feeding the solution with the starting materials to an atomizing probe (7) inside the plasma generator.
