The subject of the invention is a propulsion device (1) for a rotary-wing aerodyne with vertical take-off and landing, using coaxial and contra-rotating propellers. This device comprises a hollow frame (5) and two propellers (2,3) each having a blade holder ring (6) carrying the fixed-pitch blades (4). Drive means (14) make it possible to drive each propeller in rotation about its axis of rotation, and tilt control means (22) make it possible to tilt the propellers about the roll axis (A2) and the pitch axis (A3). The blade holder ring (6) of each propeller is connected to the drive means (14) by a ball and socket joint (13) and the drive means comprise, for each propeller, a torque motor (14) whose rotor (14a) is integral with a cage (10) on which is fixed the ball joint (13) on which pivots the blade carrier ring (6) of the propeller in question, the stator (14b) of the torque motor (14 ) being secured to the frame (5).
