To reduce inrush current generated in an electron emitting element when a voltage application is resumed by suppressing a local decrease in an element resistance value.SOLUTION: An electron emitting element is provided in which an electron acceleration layer is formed between electrodes to which a voltage is applied. In the electron emitting element, a dielectric substance layer having electrically positive temperature coefficient characteristics is formed between an electrode which is paired with an electrode serving as an electron emission surface out of both electrodes and the electron acceleration layer. The dielectric substance layer is a ceramic including at least one of barium titanate, lead titanate, and lead zirconate titanate, or a polymer including an electrically conductive carbon and a polyethylene-based polymer. The electron emitting element has a planar structure composed of both electrodes, the electron acceleration layer, and the dielectric substance layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
