PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system and a method. An improved optical coherence tomography system and a method for measuring the thickness of the retina are presented. The system is small, handheld, provides home surveillance, allows the patient to measure himself, and can still be robust enough to fall while reliably measuring the retina. In one embodiment, the small OCT system measures the change in thickness in the retina with less accuracy (or repetitiveness) than the axial resolution of the small OCT system, and the change in thickness in the retina is the first time.
